Diamond Head Summit Trail
Â
Prepare to conquer the iconic Diamond Head Crater! This moderate hike rewards you with awe-inspiring panoramic views of the island’s coastline, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the glittering Honolulu skyline. The ascent is invigorating, and reaching the summit feels like a triumph. Remember to bring your camera to capture the magical sunrise or sunset vistas that will undoubtedly earn you some envy-inducing Instagram likes! The Diamond Head Summit Trail is a popular hiking trail located on the island of Oahu and it is situated within Diamond Head State Monument. This is known for its iconic volcanic cone that offers panoramic views of Waikiki and the surrounding coastline.
The trail is located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, it is just east of Waikiki and Honolulu. It is easily accessible from major tourist areas and is just a short drive from downtown Honolulu. The trail is considered to be moderately challenging. It isn’t a particularly long trail, only about 1.6 miles or 2.6 kilometers, roundtrip. However, there are some steep sections and a series of stairs. Depending on your pace and on the crowd, this hike can typically take about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Diamond Head is an extinct volcanic crater that played a significant role in the island’s history. The crater was used as a strategic military outlook during the second World War. Along the trail you can still see some remnants of the military bunkers and observation stations.
Starting at the Diamond Head State Monument parking lot, hikers will pass through a tunnel, climb a series of stairs (roughly 175 steps), and navigate along some rocky terrain. There are multiple lookout points along the way to stop and rest. Note that pets and strollers are not permitted on this trail. Also, there is an entrance fee, we paid $15 to park and hike when we visited. Near the beginning of the trailhead there is restrooms and drinking water fountains. When we visited there was even a pineapple truck in the parking lot that we indulged in after our hike!
Some tips for this hike include:
1. Make sure to start early! Not only will you avoid crowds when starting early, but you will also avoid the excruciating heat. This should be done for all hikes in Hawaii!
2. Make sure you’re wearing proper footwear on this hike. As mentioned, this trail involves some steep sections and uneven terrain, so wearing sturdy shoes or hiking books is highly recommended. I recommend Keen or Teva’s:Â Amazon Link
3. Stay hydrated! Do not forgot to bring a water bottle with you on this hike, especially if you are hiking during the day in the peak heat. Drinking water is available near the trailhead, but not along the hiking path.Â
4. Sun protection. Please make sure to wear sunscreen (reef safe), a hat, and sunglasses in order to protect yourself from the sun. There is limited shade along this trail and escaping the sun in nearly impossible during this hike. My favorite sunscreen is this one.
5. Know your limits. While the hike is accessible to most people, it does require some physical exertion. If you have any health concerns or physical limitations, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional before attempting this hike.
The Diamond Head Summit Trail offers a rewarding hiking experience with stunning views of the Oahu coastline and a glimpse into the island’s natural and historical heritage. Add this trail to the top of your must do hikes in Oahu!
