What to Know Before Visiting an All-Inclusive Resort

Dreaming of an all-inclusive resort vacation? The promise of carefree days, endless buffets, and pristine beaches is undoubtedly alluring. However, before you pack your bags and jet off, there are a few key things you should know to ensure a smooth and enjoyable all-inclusive experience. In this blog post, I will guide you through essential tips and insights to consider before embarking on your all-inclusive resort adventure.

Do Your Research

Before booking your trip, conduct thorough research on different all-inclusive resorts. Consider factors such as location, amenities, room types, reviews, and the variety of activities offered. Remember that every all-inclusive resort is unique and different from the next. Also note that there are family-friendly all-inclusive resorts as well as adult-only all-inclusive resorts so definitely keep that in mind when booking! I have visited four all-inclusive resorts now and every single one has its pros and cons. Make sure the resort you choose aligns with your preferences and travel goals.

Understand What’s *Actually* Included

While the term “all-inclusive” implies that everything is covered, it’s important to clarify exactly what’s included in the package. These packages usually cover accommodations, meals, drinks, and some activities. Some resorts may have certain restrictions on dining, activities, or premium services. Knowing what’s covered and what isn’t will help you manage your budget effectively. From my experience, there may be an upcharge on specific food items like lobster as well as certain cuts of steak. Certain higher-end alcohols also may not be included in your package. Certain activities like watersports also aren’t included and cost extra. I have also experienced certain restaurants being for members of the hotel ONLY. Make sure you read the fine print and understand the inclusive and exclusion before you arrive. Otherwise, you can always ask a staff member.

Always Book Excursions Through the Hotel

While there are various ways to organize excursions, booking through your hotel often proves to be the most convenient, secure, and seamless option. Booking excursions through your resort streamlines the planning process as the resort staff are well-versed in the local area, activities, and reputable tour operators. Not to mention that resorts partner with trusted tour operators who meet safety standards are licensed to conduct excursions. Resorts will ensure that you are in capable hands, mitigating potential risks and uncertainties. Also, resorts are responsible for you, so if something does happen, they will have information about where you should be and who you are with. They have this information because you booked through them. However, if something happens to you and you don’t book through the resort, they will have no idea where you are and who you are with.

Booking through the resort often includes transportation to and from the excursion site. This eliminates the hassle of arranging your own transportation, allowing you to focus on enjoying the experience without worrying about logistics. I also recommend booking your transportation to and from the airport through your resort as well! Keep in mind that many all-inclusive resorts negotiate special rates with local tour operators due to the volume of business they bring. This can result in exclusive discounts or added value for guests who choose to book their excursions through the resort.

While there are various ways to organize excursions during your all-inclusive resort vacation, booking through the resort offers a multitude of benefits. From convenience and safety to exclusive deals and local expertise, this approach ensures that your off-site adventures enhance your overall vacation experience. So, next time you’re considering an excursion, let your all-inclusive resort be your gateway to unforgettable adventures.

P.S. I have experienced a wonderful excursion ziplining, ATVing, and swimming in cenotes in Mexico (booked through our resort). I have also experienced an entirely wasted day full of sketchy people, uncertainty, and talking to the local police about trying to get back to our resort because our excursion never actually happened in Punta Cana (booked through a random person at the airport). We wasted an entire day trying to go on an excursion that never actually happened and ended up getting stranded in the middle of the country. Please take my advice and learn from my personal experience and book through your resort!

Use the Safe in Your Room

An all-inclusive resort promises relaxation, luxury, and peace of mind. While you revel in the comfort and amenities, it’s essential to maintain a level of caution, especially when it comes to the security of your valuables. The in-room safe provided by the resort is not just another amenity, it’s your safeguard against potential risks. The primary purpose of a safe is to safeguard your valuables, such as passports, cash, jewelry, electronic devices, etc. Even in the most luxurious resorts, incidents of theft can occur. I have experienced theft or have known someone who has experienced theft at EVERY single resort I have been to. Unfortunately, if cash or jewelry is left out, odds are it will be taken. I personally have had cash taken from my purse as well as know people who have had jewelry stolen from them. I also know people who have had their stuff moved and searched through. My most recent experience at an all-inclusive in August of 2023, I put my passport, jewelry, cash, and laptop in the safe and had no issues whatsoever. The in-room safe offers a simple and effective way to protect your belongings and enjoy your vacation to the fullest without unnecessary worries.

Bring Cash for Tipping

While it’s an all-inclusive package, consider budgeting for tips. The staff at all-inclusive resorts work hard to ensure you have a pleasant stay. Show your appreciation by being courteous, polite, and bringing cash to tip! From my personal experience both their currency and U.S. dollars are accepted. I always leave tips during every single meal usually ranging from 3 to 10 USD. Bringing cash for tipping at an all-inclusive resort is a thoughtful decision that elevates your vacation experience for both you and the dedicated staff who make your stay exceptional. It’s a tangible way to express gratitude, foster personal connections, and support the culture of service excellence that defines these destinations. By keeping cash on hand, you enrich your interactions, enhance your enjoyment, and leave a lasting positive impact on the people who create unforgettable vacation memories.

P.S. Any cash that you do not take with you should stay in your in-room safe!

Book Restaurant Reservations in Advance (if needed)

All-inclusive resorts are renowned for offering a wide range of dining options ensuring that every guest’s culinary desires are met. However, the popularity of these resorts can lead to high demand for their restaurants, making advanced reservations a smart strategy. By planning ahead and securing your dining arrangements, you not only save time and stress, but also ensure that you make the most of your dining experiences. What is also nice is that resorts don’t lock you into your choices, they often times let you modify and change your reservation if needed. Some resorts do require reservations for certain or all their restaurants so make sure you ask whether you need reservations or not. By planning ahead, you set the stage for a seamless, enjoyable, and truly indulgent stay that leaves you with cherished memories of both the flavors and the moments shared with loves ones.

P.S. Make sure to check the restaurants dress codes before you leave for your trip. Often times men need to wear pants and closed-toe shoes for dinner. Restaurants will not let you dine with them if you are not dressed according to their dress code so make sure to look at this beforehand and pack accordingly!

Bring Plenty of Sunscreen

This one may seem obvious, but you go through A LOT of sunscreen when you’re spending all of your time out in the sun. A trip to an all-inclusive resort promises unforgettable experiences, relaxation, and enjoyment. To be able to fully embrace these moments and ensure a healthy and comfortable vacation, packing plenty of sunscreen is a must. One day of not keeping up with sunscreen can ruin your whole entire trip. By shielding your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing sunburn, and promoting skin health, you’re taking a proactive step toward making the most of your time in the sun. With sunscreen as your constant companion, you can savor the beauty of the outdoors while safeguarding your skin for years of future adventures. A lot of time is spent by the pool and the beach so make sure you’re using reef safe sunscreen as well as a good sunscreen that won’t burn your eyes. This is my favorite face sunscreen: My favorite sunscreen!

Bring an Insulated Cup & Stay Hydrated

One item that should be at the top of your packing list is an insulated cup. While it might seem like a small addition, an insulated cup can make a significant impact on your comfort, convenience, and enjoyment throughout your stay. Not only do insulated cups keep your drinks cold longer, but they also reduce plastic waste as well as keep you hydrated wherever you go. They are the perfect companion by the pool, by the beach, or even with you on an excursion (that you booked through the resort). It is easy to forget to drink water when you’re indulging in cocktails in the pool all day, but it is so important to stay hydrated in these tropical climates. Having an insulated cup to carry around makes it even easier to hydrate regularly without constantly searching for a water station. Not to mention, the cups they usually give you for water are super small. An insulated cup might be a seemingly simple item, but its benefits during an all-inclusive resort vacation are undeniable. From maintaining the ideal temperature of your drinks to reducing waste and enhancing your overall comfort, this versatile accessory proves its worth time and time again. By packing an insulated cup, you’re ensuring that every sip you take during your stay is as refreshing and enjoyable as the vacation itself. This is my favorite insulated cup to bring with my traveling: My favorite insulated cup!

P.S. Make sure to check with the staff and find out whether the tap water is safe to drink or not!

Visiting an all-inclusive resort can be a fantastic way to experience luxury, convenience, and a worry-free vacation. By keeping these essential tips in mind, you’ll be better prepared to navigate the offerings, make the most of your vacation, and return home with cherished memories of your time in paradise.
