Where to Eat in Tromso, Norway

Tromsø is an adorable arctic hub that has some great places to eat. A lot of these spots are actually lunch spots because more often than not you find yourself out northern lights chasing at dinner time. I put together a list for you guys of some places you should definitely check out when visiting Tromsø, Norway.

Svermeri Kafe og Redesign

If you are looking for an adorable lunch spot with some delicious soup, cake, and coffee, Svermeri Kafe og Redesign is the place to go. I didn’t see any recommendations for this place online, however it is a few buildings down from BURGR (a video game themed burger place that I also recommend going to). Thankfully my sister and I ended up going into this coffee place and we were happily surprised!

You walk in and are greeted by the sweetest people and some even sweeter looking cake! They usually only have one soup special for the day and when we went it was a sweet potato soup. After taking our order we could choose to sit either upstairs or downstairs, so we decided on the downstairs area. The temperature and the seating were absolutely perfect, and the interior was absolutely adorable.

We got ourselves a cup of coffee to split and I kid you not this was the best coffee I have ever had while traveling. We immediately regretted splitting a coffee, but don’t worry we ended up going back there two more times that week.

After a few minutes, we were greeted with our sweet potato soup and it was heavenly! It even came with some absolutely delicious bread to dunk in. This soup was like nothing I have ever had before and just thinking of it now makes my mouth water! After our soup, we both got a slice of blueberry cake which was warmed up and accompanied with some vanilla ice cream. Yup, you guessed it! It was de-li-cious!

After having such an amazing experience there we ended up going two more times that week and had equally amazing desserts and soups. We loved this place so much that we ended up buying a coffee cup to remember it! This place wasn’t super cheap or super expensive, it was very moderately priced with some amazing coffee, soups, and cakes. I can’t recommend this place enough and if I could I would go to Tromsø in a heartbeat just to visit this place!

BURGR

Since I already mentioned it above, I might as well talk about this place next! BURGR is a super small, but super cute burger place that is covered head to toe in video game designs. One wall is completely covered in old video game posters. The tables look like little video game controllers and they even named the food on their menu after famous video game characters. Other than the wall covered with posters, everything else is mostly Mario themed, including the menu. I have personally always been a huge fan of video games, including Mario, so this was a must do for me!

Not only was this place amazing, but it was the reason why we discovered Svermeri Kafe og Redesign considering it was a few buildings down from it. I ordered the classic burger which they called the “Mario Burger” and I got myself a chocolate shake. The shake and fries were absolutely delicious, although I do wish I got myself a crazier burger considering they had many cool ones! The classic burger was definitely good, though nothing extraordinary, but like I said, that was more so my fault!

The atmosphere is very fun, and you can even write on the chalkboard walls in the bathroom. There’s only about three tables and a bar area, but overall, I really liked this place. If you’re a video game nerd like me or if you’re looking for some different burgers to try definitely come here!

Art Cafe

Unlike the first cafe I mentioned, this one was recommended everywhere! The Art Cafe is a hot spot for tourists, and nonetheless it was delicious. However, I did find it a little weird that when this place is full, they simply put a sign up that says, “We’re full, come back later.” You can’t choose to stand and wait for a table. So, you have to test your luck with this place. The first time we tried visiting we saw that sign and got turned away. A cruise ship had just pulled into the docks and everyone must have bolted for this cafe.

They have art covering all of the walls, hence the name, which you can actually buy! We started off with some water which had slices of oranges in it and honestly, my mind was blown. I’ve never had water with sliced oranges before and if you haven’t tried this you definitely need to! They start you off with some bread (did I mention that all the bread I had in Norway was phenomenal? Well, this bread with no exception!)

My sister and I both ordered different kinds of pasta which were both delicious. We ended the night with a slice of chocolate cake, which I saw another blogger mention that I had to try. It was one of the tastiest slices of chocolate cake I have ever had! This could definitely be either a lunch spot or a dinner spot. Overall, this place was adorable and yummy, and you should definitely check this place out.

Smotorget Cafe

This was another cafe that was highly recommended, however we ended up going into this place not knowing what it was. My sister and I were searching for this cafe everywhere until we gave up and wandered into exactly what we were looking for. This place was adorable and busy from the outside so we couldn’t help but go inside and check it out!

We got ourselves some soup and some pastries that were definitely good, just nothing crazy. However, the table we sat in allowed us to watch the bakers make cake and once they brought the cake out, I had to try it. So thankful I did because it was some of the best carrot cake I have ever had! The frosting was to die for, you could tell it was homemade. This is a good little breakfast and lunch spot. You can easily grab things to go or take a seat because this place was pretty big!

Elefant Indisk

There weren’t that many restaurants that wowed us, especially when it came to dinner. As you can tell my list mainly consists of cafes. On our last night in Tromsø, we decided to take our chances and go to an Indian restaurant. I’m so glad we did because this was probably the best dinner we had in Tromsø.

The atmosphere was lovely, and our waiter was super friendly. He even gave us some advice on what to order. We ended up ordering the roasted garlic naan and some vegetable samosas to start. As I mentioned before, all the bread I had in Norway was delicious and surprise! This was not an exception! The samosas were to die for, and my sister especially enjoyed them because she’s a vegetarian and hardly ever gets to eat samosas!

My sister and I ended up splitting our main meals which we got the palak paneer, which is an Indian farmer’s cheese in a spicy garlic puree and the vegetables korma. Our meals also came with a big pot of rice to share. The food was delicious, having just enough spice and it was everything we needed for our last night. If you like Indian food I highly recommend coming here!

Graffi

Graffi was a restaurant that was right across the street from where we stayed, the Clarion Hotel The Edge. It was a convenient location and had a pretty diverse menu. While we waited for a table to open up, we got drinks at the bar. These were easily the best drinks we had in Norway. Both of our drinks were on the specials sheet. Although I’m pretty sure mine was a frozen strawberry daiquiri while my sister got a passion fruit margarita. These drinks were insanely good!

Unfortunately, our dinner was subpar. I got a barbeque burger and something about it was just off. I’m pretty sure their version of barbeque was very different from mine. My sister got a vegetarian dish that had a yummy flavor, but she wasn’t a fan of the alternative meat they gave her.

Thankfully, dessert saved this place! I am a huge dessert person and my sister said, “Get whatever you want!” I then proceeded to order the dessert feast for two people. I have never had a dessert feast before, and I loved every second of it. It included grilled pineapple, Oreos, cookies, pound cake, vanilla ice cream, passion fruit ice cream, a chocolate bomb, some meringue cookies, and lots of berries! The dessert was very tasty, and my two favorites were the chocolate bomb and the passion fruit ice cream! This is definitely a good place to go for drinks and dessert! These were some of my favorite places we ate when in Norway! Feel free to comment even more places to eat in Tromsø, Norway.
