A Perfect 10-Day Itinerary in Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii

If you’ve been dreaming of turquoise waves, lush landscapes, and some of the best food you’ll ever taste, Hawaii should be at the very top of your travel list. I recently spent 10 days soaking up the magic of Oahu and Kauai, and I’m here to share every detail about my trip—from where to eat to must-see spots. This itinerary is packed with epic adventures, hidden gems, and the kind of experiences you’ll remember forever. Grab your sunscreen and your sense of adventure; let’s get into it!

Why Choose Oahu and Kauai?

Oahu and Kauai are two of Hawaii’s most breathtaking islands, each offering something unique. Oahu, home to the bustling Waikiki Beach and iconic Pearl Harbor, combines city vibes with beautiful landscapes. Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, is all about raw, natural beauty, from the Na Pali Coast to Waimea Canyon. Together, they provide the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

Side note: I highly recommend renting a car is possible, there is so much to see on both islands that renting a car is SO worth it. Plus, driving along the scenic roads and stopping at different viewpoints is an experience in itself.

Get ready to savor every bite, wander every trail, and soak up the Aloha spirit!

Day 1: Arrival in Oahu

Welcome to Waikiki! Start your Hawaiian adventure by settling into your accommodations and heading straight to the heart of it all, Waikiki Beach.

What We Did:

Comfort food at its finest! We grabbed the Tonkotsu bowl ($12.55), paired it with fried chicken and sweet potato tempura on the side. Fresh, fast, and oh-so-flavorful! The freshness and flavor of this spot can’t be beaten. This causal yet delicious spot is a MUST TRY when in Oahu. Expect a line out the door during peak hours, but it moves quickly and is worth the wait.

  • Supplies: ABC Store

These stores are everywhere, but if you’re staying longer, we recommend heading to a larger grocery store like Foodland or Safeway to save money. But for a quick and convenient option, ABC Stores have all your basic necessities covered.

  • Unwind at Waikiki Beach: We caught the sunset while walking and swimming at the famous Waikiki Beach. The golden skies reflecting off the waves created the perfect welcome to Hawaii.

Craving something sweet? The Dark Fantasy cup ($9) topped with chocolate and banana ice cream did the trick. A rich and refreshing treat to end your first day. Don’t miss out!

  • Stay: We stayed at this VRBO right in the heart of Waikiki. Where we stayed Everything about this VRBO was perfect, amazing location, nice and clean, and within walking distance of so many great spots!
  • Nightlife in Waikiki: For those looking to explore the nightlife scene in Waikiki, head to Duke’s Waikiki. This iconic beachside bar offers live music, great drinks, and an unbeatable view of the sunset. Plus, they have delicious food options if you get hungry while dancing the night away.

Day 2: Explore Oahu’s East Coast

Kick off your first full day in Oahu with spectacular views and charming eats.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Sunrise: Start your day with a magical sunrise from your hotel balcony or a local lookout point. We were able to get amazing sunrises at our VRBO! The peaceful morning light is a perfect way to soak in the island vibe. I highly recommend trying to catch as many sunrises as possible while in Hawaii! Diamond Head hike is especially a great spot! Read my blog on this hike and many other hikes in Oahu!
  • Breakfast at Hawaiian Aroma: $13.95 for their Tropics Bowl (12oz) packed with tropical flavors. A fresh and healthy way to get your energy up! Light, tropical, and delicious!
  • Halona Blowhole Scenic Area: Gaze at the dramatic bursts of water shooting up from the rocks. It’s Mother Nature putting on a show! No swimming here, but it’s worth a quick stop.
  • Beaches, Beaches, Beaches:
    • Waimanalo Beach: This postcard-perfect beach has rough waves but mesmerizing views. Less crowded, wild waves, absolutely stunning.
    • Kailua Beach Park: A little quieter, with a chance to spot turtles in the water! Watch out for giant green sea turtles or lounge in the shade of this stunning spot. Go early and bring shade— trees are limited but helpful!

Shoyu edamame ($8) and pork belly bao ($18) stole the show here. I have visited this brewery on multiple islands, and it is always a great meal! The atmosphere is casual, but the food is top-notch, not to mention so many delicious beers to choose from! I recommend ordering a flight of local brews!

  • Evening Stroll in Waikiki: Wander through the lively streets of Waikiki, soaking in the energy and grabbing souvenirs!

Arrive early for crowd-free photos and better lighting. You can wander around here for hours on hours. This spot was the perfect setting for my proposal during this trip! Location: 45-680 Luluku Road, Kaneohe, HI 96744 Highlights: Spanning 400 acres, this garden features plants from tropical regions around the world, including Africa, India, and Polynesia. Day 4-6: Outdoor Adventures & Food Highlights in Oahu

These days are all about thrilling activities and iconic landmarks. It’s time for an adrenaline rush.

  • Visit Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre private nature reserve and working cattle ranch located on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Established in 1850, the ranch is nestled between the majestic Koʻolau Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, offering visitors a blend of rich history, cultural significance, and diverse recreational activities.
    •  Historically, Kualoa was considered one of the most sacred places on Oahu. It served as a residence for Hawaiian royalty and was a place of refuge and sanctuary, known as a puʻuhonua. Additionally, it functioned as a training ground for royalty in the arts of war, history, and social traditions.
    • Kualoa Ranch’s diverse landscapes have made it a popular filming location for numerous movies and television shows. Notable productions include “Jurassic Park,” “Godzilla,” “50 First Dates,” “Lost,” and “Hawaii Five-0.” Visitors can explore these iconic sites through specialized tours.
  • UTV Raptor Experience: You must try this two-hour adventure driving through lush, dirt-covered trails. Prepare to get messy and have the time of your life. Must bring sunglasses, bandana or face cover, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty! About $155 per adult. If UTV-ing isn’t your scene, there are plenty of our tours! Book them here

  • Sharks Cove Snorkeling: Snorkel at Shark’s Cove, one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Pack your snorkel gear and explore diverse marine life at this scenic cove.  Free parking but limited shade—bring reef-safe sunscreen and snorkel gear. I recommend water shoes as well!
  • Captain Bob’s Picnic Sail: Enjoy everything from volleyball on a sandbar to snorkeling with sea turtles. This tour is an unforgettable highlight! Captain Bob’s Picnic Sail is a renowned tour operator offering a unique sailing experience in Oahu’s picturesque Kaneohe Bay. • Hawaii Shark Encounters: Meet Galápagos sharks on a once-in-a-lifetime boat tour. If you’re an adventure seeker visiting Oahu, Hawaii Shark Encounters is an absolute must-do experience. Meeting at 6:30 a.m. in Haleiwa Harbor, this thrilling tour takes you miles offshore into the deep blue, where you’ll come face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most majestic and misunderstood creatures.
    • We got super lucky and got the chance to see a massive 16-foot tiger shark alongside several Galapagos sharks, all from the safety of a secure, floating cage. The early wake-up call is more than worth it for the adrenaline rush and surreal beauty of watching these powerful predators glide through the water. However, the open ocean conditions can get choppy, so if you’re prone to seasickness, this tour might not be for you. For everyone else, it’s a jaw-dropping, bucket-list adventure that offers a deeper appreciation for sharks and their role in the marine ecosystem. Make sure to bring a GoPro!
  • A visit to the Dole Plantation on Oahu is a fun, family-friendly must-do that combines local history, tropical scenery, and sweet treats. We opted to just visit the plantation, no tour and still had SO much fun!
    • Originally a simple fruit stand in the 1950s, it’s now a popular attraction offering a peek into Hawaii’s pineapple-growing past. The star of the show? Dole Whip— a refreshing, dairy-free pineapple soft serve that’s iconic, delicious, and perfect on a hot day (don’t skip the Dole Whip float for an extra treat!).
    • Beyond the treats, you can explore the world’s largest maze, take a pineapple express train tourthrough the plantation fields, or stroll through the botanical gardens.
    • For the best experience, go early to avoid crowds, wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes, and check out the gift shop for pineapple-themed goodies. It’s a lighthearted stop that’s both tasty and educational — perfect for couples, families, or anyone craving a sweet slice of island life.
  • Visit the historic Pearl Harbor. Book your $1 reservation a day before at 3 PM and arrive early. Respect the site’s solemn history. It is a few minutes boat ride out to Pearl Habor, and you only have about 10-15 minutes at the site, there are no bathrooms.

Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your visit:

  • Arrive Early
    • The site opens at 7:00 a.m., and arriving early gives you the best chance to reserve a spot on the free boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial (which often books out quickly).
    • Mornings are also cooler and less crowded.
  • Reserve Tickets in Advance
    • Entry to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is free, but tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial must be reserved in advance at recreation.gov. They release a limited number of tickets 8 weeks out and again 24 hours in advance at 3:00 p.m. HST.
    • Other attractions like the Battleship Missouri and Aviation Museum have separate admission fees and can also be booked ahead of time.
  • Bag Policy
    • Bags are not allowed inside the site for security reasons. You can check small bags at the entrance for a fee, but it’s best to leave purses, backpacks, and large items behind if you can.
  • Dress Comfortably & Prepare for Sun
    • Wear light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen — you’ll be outside often, and it can get hot quickly.
    • Comfortable walking shoes are also a must, especially if you’re visiting all four main sites.
  • Be Respectful
    • The USS Arizona Memorial is a somber, sacred site — many people come to pay respects to fallen servicemen. Keep voices low and treat the memorial with reverence.
  • Bring a Camera (Without the Bag!)
    • You’re welcome to take photos (no flash on the memorial). There are also some amazing views of Ford Island, the harbor, and the ships that make for powerful images.
  • Consider a Guided Tour or Shuttle
    • If you want a deeper historical understanding, guided tours are available and often include transportation from Waikiki. You can also use a shuttle service to visit Ford Island, which is where the Missouri and Aviation Museum are located — it’s not accessible by foot. Also finding parking here can be quite tricky during peak hours!

  3. Respect the Land and Culture: Hawaii is more than a tourist destination; it’s a cherished home. Support local businesses and follow guidelines at natural parks. Always keep a safe distance from animals like sea turtles, monk seals, and whales, and follow guidelines when visiting protected areas like Haleakalā National Park or the Na Pali Coast.
  4. Embrace the Aloha Spirit:Be friendly and open to the local culture. A smile goes a long way in Hawaii, and showing respect for local customs and traditions will make your experience richer.
  5. Try Local Foods:Hawaii’s food scene is a mix of cultures, and trying local delicacies like poke, loco moco, or a refreshing shave ice is a must. Don’t forget to visit iconic food trucks!
  6. Stay Safe in the Water:Whether you’re snorkeling, surfing, or just swimming, always be mindful of ocean conditions. Respect warning signs and never swim alone in unfamiliar areas.
